Food Week

November 6th to November 10th will be Sustainable Food Week. The week will focus on various aspects of food and the role food plays in our environment and society.

Monday, November 6, 2017, at 7:00-8:30 PM in Reid Coffee House: Food Jeopardy

Come join us to test your knowledge on sustainability and food in a game of jeopardy for a chance to win shower timers, deodorant rocks, notebooks, divest stickers, or flip the switch stickers! There will be snacks provided by Bon App! This is the first night of Food Week, a week filled with fun foodevents, stay tuned for more!


Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at 5:15-8:15 PM in Reid Campus Center Ballroom: ASWC Green Gala

Come join us at the Green Gala where Scott Slovic from the University of Idaho will be giving a presentation titled “The Pleasures (and Responsibilities) of Eating,” playing off Wendell Berry’s essay. There will be a catered dinner at 6 pm and Jeff Mathias will be speaking about our local food bank and food waste. Erendira Cruz will give a short talk about the Sustainable Living Center as well. There will also be time for the sustainability clubs to talk about what they have been doing and to present awards and acknowledge strong members of their clubs.


Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at 6:30-9:30 PM in Maxey Auditorium: Cowspiracy and Critique

Professor Don Snow will give a presentation about the history of vegetarianism and veganism before the film. We will then watch the documentary followed by a presentation by Eunice Blavascunas discussing some of the problems with the documentary.


Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 4:00-6:00 PM in Maxey 207: First Foods

Wenix Red Elk- Public  Outreach/Education Specialist of the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla will be giving a presentation on first foods with Eastern Washington.


Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 7:00-9:00 PM in Maxey Auditorium:  Sustainability Remixed (keynote)

Sustainability Remixed: The Black Radical Tradition, Food Justice, and Hip Hop Methodologies. In this talk, Dr. Harper will discuss the work of African American vegans who have been deeply influenced by hip-hop methodologies/methods in how they engage in food justice, sustainability, and fighting against systemic racism/anti-Blackness within the USA. Dr. Harper will discuss how this engagement is a continuum of the Black Radical Tradition which historically has fought against not just anti-Black racism, but capitalism and other systemic inequities that deeply and negatively impact non-white people in the USA.


Friday, November 10, 2017, at 4:00-5:00 PM: Food Week Debrief

there will be a discussion in the GAC about Food Week facilitated by Kazi Joshua and Brandon Bishop. This will be a place for the campus community to reflect on theweek and discuss ways to move forward.
