13 Green New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again. Even if you aren’t in the habit of making (or sticking to) New Year’s resolutions, consider taking on one or more of these very achievable green resolutions.

    1. Attend a sustainability club meeting. Find info about the 8+ active groups on campus at http://goaswc.org/sustainability.

    2. Bike rather than drive. Free bikes are available through the Whitman Bike Share. Visit the Penrose Library circulation desk to check out a bike for your next grocery run.
    3. Utilize public transit. Did you know that it only costs 50¢ to ride the bus in Walla Walla? Or that you can flag down a bus anywhere on its route? Learn more at https://www.valleytransit.com/framesets/info.htm.
    4. Remember your reusable shopping bags. Leaving them by the door or in your vehicle’s trunk may help.
    5. Eat less meat. Reducing your meat consumption by even one meal a week helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Learn more at https://greenfuture.io/healthy-eating/meatless-monday/.
    6. Purchase green and cruelty-free cosmetics, or make your own!
    7. Use toxin-free cleaning products. Do some research and learn what is in the products you use.10730881_746546512094823_6672169633860994072_n
    8. Purchase local foods. Walla Walla is home to a wide array of farms which sell their products through CSAs and farmers markets. https://www.downtownwallawalla.com/farmers-market/
    9. Buy unpackaged foods to cut down on your garbage. Several local grocery stores have bulk sections where you can fill your own reusable containers.
    10. Buy second hand goods. Visit our local thrift stores, utilize the forsale listserve, or just swap clothes with friends.
    11. Take shorter showers. Try cutting down your showers by a few minutes at a time to help save water.
    12. Wash your clothes and yourself in cold water. It takes a lot of energy to heat water! Showering in cold water will also help you shorten your showers.tree
    13.  Finally, find out how you’ve doing by taking the ASWC Sustainability Survey! https://whitmancollege.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7UHYG27EccBAd6J
