As the only members of the ASWC Congress to be elected by the entire membership, the Executive Council is charged with advocating the will of the student body to all levels of governance within the College.

The Executive Council holds office hours every Monday and Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the ASWC Office (Reid 210). Additionally, we have a weekly meeting on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the same room. Any and all students are welcome and encouraged to come to voice your comments, concerns, and ideas!

The President presides over meetings of the Senate and chairs the Executive Council, and sets meeting agendas. The President has the ability to vote to break ties in Senate, authorize the distribution of ASWC funds, and call Special Senate sessions. [III.2.A]

The Vice-President serves as the Student Affairs Chair and sits in on the Curriculum Committee. The Vice-President, along with the Club Director, helps to plan and execute Town Hall meetings and maintain organization of ASWC legislation. [III.2.B]

The Nominations Chair communicates with and monitors Campus Media Organizations, as well as manages the nominations process for ASWC appointed positions. Additionally, the Nominations Chair works with the Dean of Faculty and the Faculty Chair in order to initiate student/faculty meetings for College Committees. [III.2.C]

The Finance Chair oversees all monetary transactions under the auspices of ASWC and keeps an accurate account thereof, making a report of all financial activities to the Senate each fiscal year and providing financial statements to any ASWC Organization upon request. Additionally, the Finance Chair serves on the Budget Committee for the Governing Board of Whitman College, the President’s Budget Advisory Committee of Whitman College, and the Club Sport’s Committee. The Finance Chair has the power to authorize distribution of ASWC Funds. [III.2.D]

The Club Director oversees the activity of all ASWC-recognized clubs, acting as the main point of contact between ASWC clubs and the ASWC Executive Council and Senate. The Club Director also maintains records of all club forms and assigns senators to club representatives as liasons between the senate and clubs. [III.2.E]

The Oversight Chair leads the Oversight Committee in interpreting and applying the Constitution and By-laws, and leads oversight in the conduct of elections. The Oversight Chair also initiates investigations when necessary. [III.2.G]

The Ombudsperson provides the Executive Council, the Senate, and other interested members of the student body with advice and insight based on institutional memory and ASWC leadership experience. The Ombudsperson acts as a source of information to the Executive Council and Senate by providing a history of congressional procedure and providing continuity between sessions of Congress. This is a strictly advisory role, chosen at the first Senate meeting of each semester and confirmed by a two-thirds vote. [III.2.H]

The Executive Director of Communications supervises the Communications Department and develops and conveys Congress’s image while effectively communicating the business with all members. The Executive Director of Communications also maintains and updates the Constitution and By-laws, distributing them to all Executive Council members, Senators, salaried employees of ASWC, and the ASWC Advisor. [III.2.I]

The Diversity & Inclusion Director works actively to voice the concerns of historically underrepresented groups on campus in coordination with ASWC-affiliated activist groups & coalitions as well as through established institutional channels like meeting with the administration & serving on the Whitman Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity (WIDE) council.
